This Therapy Dog & Handler training course is designed to equip you and your dog with the skills required to work together in an animal-assisted therapy setting. It is our primary goal that your dog and your client/s are both safe and enjoy their experiences together. Therefore, this 6-day course covers a wide range of topics from obedience, manners and canine body language to specific animal assisted intervention training.
This course is suitable for:
--- Registered, practicing health professionals (registered with AHPRA)
--- Health professionals who are registered with a regulatory body appropriate to their industry (e.g. APS)
--- Registered teachers
This course is for people who have their own dog and are looking to become involved in the field of AAT. It is also for those practitioners out there who are already taking their dogs to work, but have not yet had any type of formal training or assessment of their dog. While we do not require your dog to have had prior training, as we will teach you everything you need to know, you may want to have a look at our suggested course preparation here.
This course is designed to provide you with a range of dog-training skills and techniques to assist you and your dog to meet the criteria for graduation as a human-canine therapy team. The content of this course is specifically designed to meet the needs of clinicians who are working within their regular industry, meeting the requirements on their regulatory bodies (e.g. AHPRA, APS). Some of the theoretical course content includes:
- Clinical case studies
- Intervention training
- Insurance requirements
- Funding options & restrictions
- Client & Canine ethical considerations
- Role play intervention practice
- Facility visit
Throughout the 6-day course we do a range of assessments and if you and your dog meet the criteria, you will graduate at a specified level. Levels are explained here, the criteria for graduation can be discussed with you prior to enrolment in the course (on request). We encourage dog-handler teams to be working towards those criteria prior to commencement of the course, but it is not compulsory. Dogs and handlers who do not meet graduation criteria will have the opportunity to book an individual assessment at a time of their choosing (or at one of our Group Training days) your Therapy Dog bandana will be provided upon graduation, whenever that might be. Graduates will also receive a certificate, all certificates have an expiry date upon which time you and your dog will need to be assessed as a team again. This can be done at our Group Training Days, which are open to course graduates only. Graduation certificates may also contain information about the recommended work settings suitable for your team at the time of graduation. Course cost is $2000, with early bird fee of $1500 for courses paid in full 6 weeks prior to course start date or courses paid in full upon registration (at any time).
$2000* for 6-Day course (lunch not included, however there is a kitchen on site with a fridge, microwave, coffee making facilities etc.). This price includes a Black Dog training halter and lead, which are provided on arrival. This fee also includes a Therapy Dog bandana for course graduates. Additional bandanas and therapy dog coats can also be purchased at the time of graduation.
Note: A non-refundable deposit of $300 is required to hold your enrollment in the course. The balance is due no later than two weeks before the course start date.

This course takes place at Burpengary, which is approximately 25mins North of Brisbane, Queensland. Please email us if you require further information, the exact location will be emailed prior to the commencement of the course. The venue is close to the Burpengary Train Station. Please be aware there are other animals living on the training property, including horses, chickens & a cat - please advise at the time of booking your course if you have fears or allergies of any of these species.

This course is appropriate for people intending to work with a therapy dog in a professional setting (e.g. school, private practice, community centre), to be eligible to participate in this course, you must hold current registration in your field of work (e.g. AHPRA, QLD Department of Education). If you are unsure if you meet this criteria, please email us. This course unfortunately does not cater for people who are wishing to train their dog for assistance work, or to work within a volunteering capacity.
There is a limit of 12 places per course, therefore a non-refundable $300 deposit is required to hold your place.
The full amount is required no later than 30 days prior to the commencement of the course.
Cancellations with less than 30 days notice will not receive a refund.
In the event that you need to transfer to a different course date, a $150 admin fee will be applied. Transfers are not allowed within 30 days of the course commencement.
